Prism — a cloud-based, secure technology — was deployed to power the SmartSwitch network across merchant outlets.
Prism Switch & Prism POS
SmartSwitch Botswana was awarded a mandate by the Botswana government (Ministry of Local Government) to replace a manual, paper-based food-aid distribution system with a modern digital solution. The old system was inefficient, lacked user choice, and carried social stigma for beneficiaries.
The government wanted a solution that would allow food-grant recipients to receive allowances, purchase food from retail merchants at their convenience (choice of shop, timing, items), while maintaining dignity and privacy.
The solution also needed to work in areas with limited banking infrastructure, support many merchants (from small corner stores to general dealers), and provide secure, reliable, and timely settlement for merchants.
Prism — a cloud-based, secure technology — was deployed to power the SmartSwitch network across merchant outlets. The system supports a variety of payment options, including smart-card payments used by SmartSwitch beneficiaries.
Key capabilities of Prism that made it suitable for this use case:
Since the launch of the SmartSwitch biometric-smart-card platform powered via Prism, over 75,000 beneficiaries (many previously unbanked) have gained access to digital payments and formal financial services.
The smart-card solution transformed how food grants are distributed — beneficiaries now receive a monthly allowance on a card, which they can use at any of 1,200+ participating shops, giving them real choice over what and when to purchase.
For merchants, Prism-enabled transactions meant faster settlement — funds are settled within 48 hours — improving cash flow and liquidity.
The system helped shift from a “voucher + food-basket” distribution model — with all its inefficiencies — to a dignified, cash-less, choice-driven model that integrated previously unbanked populations into formal financial systems.
The deployment of Prism through SmartSwitch Botswana shows how a well-designed POS application does more than enable retail — it can unlock financial inclusion, restore dignity to beneficiaries, modernize social aid distribution, and support merchant communities. Prism served as the backbone for a nationwide social-payment ecosystem that bridged the formal financial system and underserved communities.
