Lesaka Technologies (merchant businesses: Kazang, Adumo)

PRISM

Case Study: Prism enables scale and internalisation of Lesaka’s merchant payments (Kazang + Adumo)

Project:

Prism enables scale and internalisation of Lesaka’s merchant payments (Kazang + Adumo)

Solution provider:

Payment switching, HSM/security infrastructure, POS/device enablement and integration across Kazang & Adumo merchant networks.

Client

Lesaka Technologies (merchant businesses: Kazang, Adumo)

Client Background:

Lesaka’s merchant division, including Kazang, Adumo and the broader Connect/GAAP portfolio, operates across township and informal markets and supports large-scale merchant deployment across South Africa. The group manages extensive merchant and device networks and plays a key role in enabling digital payments and financial inclusion in underserved communities through its acquiring and POS platforms.

Business Challenge

Lesaka’s merchant division (Kazang, Adumo and the broader Connect/GAAP portfolio) was rapidly expanding merchant deployment across township and informal markets and needed to:

  • Internalise transaction flows and reduce dependence on third-party switching/processing,
  • Secure high-volume transaction processing with enterprise-grade HSMs,
  • Scale and unify merchant acquiring across disparate device fleets (Kazang, Adumo, Connect, GAAP).

Solution: Prism delivered a multi-layered solution:

  • Prism Switch — a proprietary payment switch brought in-house to route and process acquiring flows for Kazang and Adumo, improving control, margins and cross-sell opportunities across Lesaka businesses. The switch was implemented and put live as part of Lesaka’s platform upgrades.
  • POS / device enablement — Prism supported point-of-sale enablement and integration work to get Kazang and Adumo terminals card-enabled and integrated into the internal switch and settlement rails. Lesaka also invested in POS devices to accelerate growth alongside the switch rollout.
Results & impact (select measurable outcomes)
  • Lesaka reported the Prism switch has gone live and management described it as “enhancing our go-to-market strategy.” This enabled the group to internalise more transaction flows and support merchant growth.
  • Merchant device footprint (post-Adumo integration) grew materially — the group reports ~81,106 devices deployed under Adumo, Card Connect and Kazang brands (Q3 FY25 filing). This significantly increased throughput and provided a large addressable base for Prism-enabled acquiring.
  • Total throughput for the quarter increased substantially (Lesaka reported ZAR 9.9bn throughput for the quarter referenced), demonstrating the scale of transactions now flowing through the merchant stack as acquisitions and internal switching progressed.
  • Lesaka disclosed a targeted investment in POS devices (R12 million) to support growth for Kazang and Adumo — aligned with the Prism switch go-live to ensure devices were onboarded into the internalised processing environment.

Why This Project Matters:

Margin & control: Internal switch + HSMs reduced third-party costs and gave Lesaka direct control of routing, settlement and product innovation.

Scalability: Prism’s switch and security stack supported rapid onboarding of tens of thousands of devices from Kazang and Adumo, enabling higher throughput and new product features such as card acceptance for micro-merchants.

Financial inclusion & market reach: By helping Kazang and Adumo scale card acceptance in informal markets, Prism contributed to Lesaka’s strategy to drive digitisation and inclusion among township micro-merchants.
